A pope's question

Seven inches of condemnations and one of praise:
is that the way to talk to the modern world?
—Pope John XXIII

The pope's words after taking a ruler to a page of one of the schemata (proposed agenda) prepared by the curia for approval by the Council Fathers in anticipation of Vatican Council II.   From John XXIII: Pope of the Century by Pete Hebblethwaite (p. 213).

H/T to Conciliaria "where you can relive the moving and hope-filled days of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Council, we offer day-to-day coverage, utilizing archival reporting from that time, contemporary documents and special guest correspondents who will step into a time machine to report on the dramatic events as though they were there 50 years ago."

The global observance of the anniversary will begin on 11 October 2012 -- the half-century of Vatican II's first day -- and wrap up on 24 November 2013, the feast of Christ the King.

  1. Thank you for this post and the links contained within. I especially enjoyed watching and listening to (and reading the English translation of) Pope John's speech from his balcony the night before the opening of Vatican II. What a gentle man he was.

To use Pope John's ruler analogy of the schemata for today, I would say we have at least seven inches of condemnations, but do we have even one inch of praise?

  2. It is a great shame that so many of the mandates of the Council have yet to be implemented or even respected. The stated preference for Gregorian chant, for example, was tossed out in favor of the strumming of guitars (which like a time machine always brings me back to the '70s)...As was the reaffirmation that Latin was the preferred language of the Church. To go back to the authentic teaching of the Council would result in more dignified and solemn services.
