Word for the Weekend: November 8

Image: GraceCommunion

We're approaching the end of the liturgical year.  This weekend's liturgy celebrates the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, leaving only the 33rd Sunday and the 34th, the Solemnity of Christ the King, before the First Sunday of Advent! (Can Christmas really be that close?)

This Sunday's Mass pairs two stories about widows: the widow of Zarephath who feeds Elijah with the last of the food she was saving for her son and herself (1 Kings) and the widow who gives her last two coins to the temple collection box (Mark).

We find it easy to give from the "extra" we have... but how generous are we when our giving begins to draw on what we ourselves need? These two stories confront us with a difficult question...

The second lesson of the day continues the series of readings from the Letter to the Hebrews and the image of the high priest contrasted with the priestly sacrifice of Christ.

The texts of the readings and some brief commentary are at your fingertips here.  If you'll be bringing children to Mass this weekend, find hints for helping them prepare to hear the Word of the Lord here.
