NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 9/9

 

I'm consuming way too much animosity, Lord:

    anger and vitriol, mean-spirited commentary,

    name-calling accusations, distortions of the truth

    and outright lies and fabrications...

 

If I want to keep up with current events

such is the fare, the daily menu

at the table of news and headlines,

of talk shows and social media...

All this is making me sick, Lord

- and not just in my belly!

 

This menu sours my soul, clouds my vision, 

depresses my spirit, wears down my resistance,

saps my strength and burdens my heart

with the ache and pain of sadness and grief...

Help me find, Lord, the feast of plenty

where truth is shared as loaves of bread

and vintage wine quenches a thirst

for honor, justice and virtue...

Lead me to the table that feeds

all who come to its groaning board

to be nourished and nurtured 

in mind and heart, in body, spirit and soul...

Help me feed on the truth of your word, Lord,

on the good news you came to share;

let me heartily drink from your generous cup

to lift my spirits in hope, in joy...

 

Nourish me, Lord, with all that is good

to strengthen me to face what's wrong

and to overcome, in the name of love,

the power of fear and shame and greed...

Only you, Lord, can feed my soul

with the food I hunger and thirst for:

let nothing less, then, pass my lips

than the food of your banquet of grace...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake

and watch over me while I sleep

that awake, I might keep watch with you

and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
