On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass. Tonight we reflect on that word of praise, ALLELUIA!
Beginning on Ash Wednesday
and through all of Lent, Lord,
we'll refrain, we'll fast, from the word,
ALLELUIA...
We'll still praise you and we'll still pray
and we'll not pretend that you've not risen from the dead
but we'll take 40 days to prepare,
through prayer, fasting and serving the poor,
to celebrate your rising
come Easter Sunday, April 17...
Our sanctuaries will be barren,
no flowers, greens, bright colors;
we'll cloak our prayer in somber purple
and our song will rise in tones repentant,
asking mercy and forgiveness
to cleanse us of our sins...
But today we sang out ALLELUIA,
one more time before the ashes,
smudged upon our foreheads,
mute our voices and our song
as we pray for healing peace...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen
