NIGHT PRAYER: Wednesday 8/28

This morning I referred to one of my favorite lines from the writings of Saint Augustine whose feast we celebrate today.  Night Prayer draws from another quote from Augustine that has sustained me many times over the decades of my life...

Our hearts are restless, Lord, 

    until they rest in you...

My heart is restless, Lord,

    until it rests in you...

 

My heart is anxious, Lord,

    'til it rests in your deep peace...

My heart is grieving, Lord,

    until it rests, again, in you, my joy...

 

My heart is worried, Lord,

    until it rests and trusts in you...

 

My heart is captive, Lord,

    until it rests, set free of trouble and of fear...

 

My heart is tired, Lord,

    until it rests, refreshed, in you, my strength...

 

My heart is doubtful, Lord,

    until it rests in your sweet wisdom and your truth...

 

My heart is wounded, Lord,

    until it rests, healed, held in your embrace...

 

My heart is waiting, Lord,

    until it rests in you, the One for whom I wait...

 

My heart is restless, Lord,

    until it rests in you...

 

Protect me in my restlessness,

    keep vigil while I sleep,

that awake, I keep the watch with you

    and sleeping, rest in peace...
