I picked up some dry cleaning yesterday, Lord,
and I realized, once again:
I derive way too much contentment
from freshly laundered shirts!
Gotta love those shirts, though:
perfectly pressed,
free of wrinkles, pure of stain;
pledging a crisp, fresh start,
for any day or evening;
promising a cool self-confidence,
a presence ready to meet the world...
But they're just shirts, Lord - that's all they are -
and what they proffer is short-lived,
like a crease or a pleat on a humid day...
They're just shirts, Lord - 100% cotton -
but soon enough they'll fade and fray
and threadbare at both cuff and collar
they'll lose the luster they once had known...
So, dress me, Lord, in finer threads:
clothe me in garments of grace...
Remind me often, Lord,
that clothes don't make me who I am:
it's how my heart is garbed that counts...
So wrap me in the fabric of mercy, Lord:
woven with love and seamlessly sewn,
the source of my peace and contentment,
the crisp, fresh start of every day that's mine...
Amen.
