NIGHT PRAYER: Friday 12/18

For years, Lord, my Christmas schedule was 5-6 masses
in a span of 18 hours
between Christmas eve and Christmas day
- including a mass at midnight...

But this year, Lord, things are very different
and a big part of me misses the marathon
of all the crowds, joy, song, prayer and homecoming
that filled my heart as well as my hours...

So many of the people, moments and joys
I used to anticipate
just won't be there this year
- or will be there only virtually,
on a smaller scale, on a screen,
missing the human touch...

But that's what Christmas is all about:
the touch, the embodiment of divinity in humanity,
the divine touching human flesh
with soul-deep healing;
God taking our flesh,
God's very being wrapped in our humanity,
embracing, reaching out, caressing,
becoming one with us in Jesus,
a baby at his mother's breast...

Over 2,000 years ago, O God,
your Word became flesh
when you spoke it with power, grace
and love beyond all telling...

Speak your Word again this Christmas, Lord
and break into our world
and through all that holds us captive;
break the silence in our souls
until we sing again in praise
of your mercy, joy and peace!

Break into our world again, Lord,
and let us know without a doubt and in our flesh
the blessing, grace and mercy
of divinity, touching our humanity,
one with us as we are one with you...

Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us as we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
