Driving back to Belmont today,
I was thinking....
How different life would be, Lord,
how different the world around us
if we carried the scriptures in hand
(as faithfully as we do our phones)
and checked them multiple times, all day long,
for a message, for news, to help and guide us,
calm us and bring us peace...
How different life would be, Lord,
how different the world around us
if we followed the lives of the saints (as carefully as we follow the lives of
celebrities, athlete and politicians)
studying their struggles and successes,
their stories and lifestyles as models
for negotiating our own lives' twists and turns...
How different life would be, Lord,
how different the world around us
if we followed your Spirit's guidance
(as closely as we follow the oracles
of weather forecasts and reports)
preparing us for tomorrow's high pressure,
charting, with wisdom, our way through a storm,
making us ready for sad days and fair...
How different life would be, Lord,
how different the world around us
if we cared for the needs of others
(as we care for our own wants and wishes)
generously sharing all that we have,
providing the poor with the best we can offer,
finding our plenty in our neighbor's abundance...
How different life would be, Lord,
how different the world around us
if we lived for you and for others
(with the love we have for ourselves)
inviting, including, giving and sharing,
embracing with healing, welcoming home
brothers and sisters, one and all,
all of us, one in you...
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us as we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
I see trees of green
Red roses too
I see them bloom
For me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
I see skies of blue
And clouds of white
The bright blessed day
The dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying
"I love you"
I hear babies cry
I watch them grow
They'll learn much more
Than I'll never know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself
What a wonderful world
