Lord, I know that
eye has not seen and ear has not heard
what you've made ready for us in heaven
but I have a hunch that
heaven's a vacation that never ends!
Well, that's what I was thinking
when I left the Cape this morning
and headed west on Route 6:
it would have been heaven
to stay another week!
No, my vacation wasn't perfect
- no vacation is - but it was really fine:
no schedule, no obligations, no alarm clock,
easy going, smooth sailing, unhurried,
peace and quiet, lots of rest, fresh air,
good people, good friends, good times,
time for you, time with you, time for prayer...
The best parts, Lord?
Catching up with folks I love, folks who love me,
folks I don't see every day:
chats with S, coming and going;
D's warm greeting on Tuesday night;
lunching theologically with J and L;
tugboat treats with P and J;
an evening out with D cubed;
dining alfresco with C and F;
pizza with M - who had a good day;
a surprise meeting with J and his family;
embargoed right between J and D;
stopping by to see L at work...*
That's like heaven, too, Lord - right?
A reunion with all who bring blessings and joy,
healing and warmth, compassion and friendship,
peace and calm to our hearts and souls,
- to our lives...
Vacation's a little bit of heaven, Lord,
and it whets my appetite
for what eye hasn't seen and ear hasn't heard
of all you've made ready for us
in the reign of your love
that never ends...
Amen.
*The events are real but the initials may not correspond
to the folks I spent time with on vacation.
