Pause for Prayer: THURSDAY 9/30

What a gift, Lord, when somebody listens,
someone who makes some time for me,
someone who pays attention,
   who leans in to my every word
   who won't interrupt or cut me short,
   who respects what I say with my lips
      and hears all my heart reveals...

When someone listens this closely
I often need no response:
    just to be heard is enough, Lord,
    to be heard, understood and reverenced;
to know that I'm not alone
    with my questions and fears,
    my thoughts and ideas,
    my hopes and my heartache,
    my sorrows and joys...

It might be a friend  or someone at home,
    a neighbor or sometimes a stranger,
just someone with patience, time to share
    and a heart that's open to mine...

And who's the greatest listener of all?
That would be no one but you, Lord!
You're always ready, always there,
    paying attention, totally focused,
    leaning in to my every word;
you'll listen forever to all I say
    and you hear in my silence
    the unvoiced prayer
    my heart is at pains
    to speak...

And because you listen this closely, Lord,
    I truly need no response.
Just to be heard by you is enough,
    to be heard, understood and reverenced;
to know that I'm not alone,
    that you hear my fears and questions;
to know your heart is listening
    to my thoughts and ideas,
    my hopes and my heartache,
    all my sorrows and all my joys...

What a gift, Lord, when somebody listens,
    a friend or maybe someone at home
    a neighbor or even a stranger;
but more than a gift when you listen, Lord:
    a joy, a grace, a healing balm,
    the blessed assurance and welcome relief
        of knowing that you have heard me,
    that I'm heard, understood
        and reverenced by you...

Amen.
