In my part of the world, Lord, today's a holiday
- even if folks can't seem to agree
on what what and whom we're celebrating...
But I'm thinking tonight, praying tonight, Lord,
for all the people who didn't get a day off from work,
who had no respite from sickness or grief,
worry and fear, doubt and confusion...
I'm praying tonight, Lord,
for those who can't take time off
from violence and war,
from poverty, homelessness, hunger
from a thirst for clean water...
I bring in my prayer this evening, Lord,
those who had no break today from loneliness,
no breather from disappointment,
no relief from the sadness that clouds their vision...
I'm praying, Lord, for those who had no rest
from their caring for others
no longer able to care for themselves;
from their round-the-clock vigil
for those whose life has just begun
and those now close to the end of their days...
And I'm also praying for all those
who just have a hard time slowing down,
taking it easy, letting go and
stepping off their merry-go-round...
So, tonight I pray, Lord, visit all our hearts:
with a holiday of your presence,
a taste of your timeless peace,
a sip from your cup of joy,
your arms to hold our weary limbs,
your gentle touch to heal our pain
and your Spirit's grace, sent
to make each day a holiday, a holy day,
blessed by the time we spend with you
who spend your time, all your time, with us...
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
