NGHT PRAYER: Friday 11/19

I was out and about and in several stores today
and, Lord - it has begun: the holidays are upon us...

More traffic on the roads, more people in the stores,
more shoppers walking up and down aisles amply decked
in red and green and sparkling with tinsel and glitter
and folks in the grocery store filling shopping carts
with the fixings for next Thursday's feast...

So tonight, Lord, I'm praying for all those folks
and thinking of all the feelings and emotions
filling their hearts and souls
as Thanksgiving and Advent, Christmas and New Year's
come closer with each passing day...

You search our hearts, Lord,
and you know every joy and sorrow
lifting us up and weighing us down...

You know our hopes and our dreams,
the joyful anticipation  these days bring
and our grief and our disappointments
and the sadness this season can stir within us...

You know just what we need to hang on to
and just what we need to let go...

You offer grace to lift our souls in joy
and to heal our hearts when they're broken...

You meet us exactly where we are,
you walk the path from our pain to  your peace...

Make us gentle, Lord, with one another,
as gentle as you are with each of us,
help us walk together through the days ahead
by faith, with hope and in love...

Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Be With Me, Lord by Marty Haugen

Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble,
be with me, Lord, I pray.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord most high,
who abide in the shadow of our God,
say to the Lord, "My refuge and fortress,
the God in whom I trust!"

No evil shall befall you, no pain come near,
for the angels stand close by your side,
guiding you always and bearing you gently,
watching over your life.

Those who cling to the Lord live secure in God's love,
lifted high those who trust in God's name.
Call on the Lord who will never forsake you,
God will bring you salvation and joy.
