NIIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 3/27

On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass. Tonight we reflect on a phrase in today's gospel, the story of the prodigal son: "When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need... Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger."

Lord...

When guilt and shame consume me
help me come to my senses,
remembering that your mercy never fails me...

When I"m confused and don't know what to do
help me come to my senses,
trusting that your Spirit always guides me...

When I'm lost in grief and sorrow
help me come to my senses
and find in you my peace and consolation...

When I'm making foolish choices
help me come to my senses
and follow the wisdom of your word...

When I'm impatient and quick-tempered
help me come to my senses,
helping all as I'd have them help me...

When I'm alone, with no one else to turn to,
help me come to my senses
and lean on you, my friend and my companion...

When I've backed myself into a corner,
help me come to my senses
and see that forward is my only way to go...

When I'm jealous and selfish
help me come to my senses
and open my mind and heart to others...

When my heart is broken into pieces,
help me come to my senses
and welcome your gentle, healing touch...

When I see someone in need, Lord,
help me come to my senses
and recognize it's you who needs my help...

When I've hit bottom, Lord,
help me come to my senses
and reach for you to help and lift me up

When I'm afraid of what's before me
help me come to my senses, Lord,
and trust all shall be well...

Help me come, Lord, to my senses:
open wide my eyes, my heart, my life
to find in you the peace I seek and long for...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep rest in your peace...

Amen.
