A friend has asked me an important question, Lord,
a question whose answer is the foundation of everything we believe:
What is faith?
In the Letter to the Hebrews Saint Paul offers a beautiful definition:
Faith is confidence in what we hope for
and
assurance about what we do not see...
Clearl then, faith is a gift, your gift to us, Lord:
a gift of confidence and assurance
in realities we don't yet, can't yet see - and yet believe -
because our confidence lies in you
and our assurance is filled with your promise and power...
In this way, Lord, faith is much like love,
even the love we have for one another:
Love is confidence in what I hope for in this relationship,
and my assurance of fidelity in a future I don't yet see...
Of course the difference, Lord, is this:
in faith, you are the guarantor, the source of our hope;
you see what we cannot see;
your knowledge is immeasurably beyond our grasp;
you assure us of peace beyond our imagining
and you know, in full, the mystery of how, in the end,
you'll rescue us, save us, restore and redeem us...
Faith is a gift, your gift to us,
and you only ask that we take a leap, a step in faith,
and fall, with hope and assurance,
into your waiting, loving, saving arms,
there to rest and be held
'til we have what we hoped for
and find what we searched for:
the mercy, love and peace prepared
for those who watch and wait and trust
in faith, O Lord, for you...
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.

It seems like there's so much to hope for
So many dreams I wish they all could come true
When I think about Your ways, Lord
It gives me so much faith in all that You do
Faith to see beyond what I can see
Faith to know that You will do great things
I will trust You, Lord, I'll always believe
As I hold onto my faith
Jesus, you are holding on to me...
Faith to see beyond what I can see
Faith to know that You will do great things
I will trust You, Lord, I'll always believe
As I hold onto my faith
Jesus, you are holding on to me
As I hold onto my faith
Jesus, you are holding on to me
