NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 9/19

I posted this several years back but it strikes me that it's an apt prayer for this election season.  So, I've made some changes and here it is...

 

I have more ways than I know, Lord,

of keeping myself 

from truths that would challenge and change my life:

    how I see; how I live; 

    how I think; how I share; 

    how I choose; how I vote...

My prejudice and biases, 

my mindsets and partialities 

shield me, even blind me

from what I just don't want to see

- or hear or think or learn or know...

I believe the truth will set me free
but in far too many ways
I keep the truth from seeping in
to change and shape 

my mind and heart...

 

Send your Spirit's fire, Lord,
to light and burn the truth upon
    my mind's ideas and thoughts,
    my heart's desires and passions,

    my persuasions and my choices,

    my decisions and my deeds...

Let  your truth set me free, Lord,
let your Spirit come
to challenge and to change the ways
I look at life - and live it...

Disabuse me of the foolish thought

that I know more than all the rest,

that I have nothing left to learn,

- that I know more than you, Lord...

 

Heal me of what blinds me

    to the truth that's right before me,

    to what challenges and calls me

    to become more than I am...

 

Make me humble, Lord, in all the ways

I listen, speak and answer;

how I'm docile to your word and truth

and bend my will to yours...

 

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake

and watch over me while I sleep

that awake, I might keep watch with you

and asleep, rest in your peace...

 

Amen. 

 

Tonight's song is not the one I posted with this prayer the first time 'round.  This is a new find for me and I believe it pairs well with tonight's prayer...
