NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 1/26

On Sundays, Night Prayer takes its lead from an element in the day's liturgy.  Six years ago, Pope Francis designated this Third Sunday in Ordinary time as Sunday of the Word of God, a day set apart to deepen and enrich our love and reverence for God's Word.  Today's first reading and gospel contribute richly to this effort.

Speak to me, Lord...

Speak a word of blessing,
a word of gentle kindness,
a word of cleansing mercy...

Speak a word to help me, Lord,
a word to heal what hurts,
a word to make me whole...

Speak a word of summons
to alert me to your presence,
to call me your work...

Speak a word of pardon, Lord,
a word of your forgiveness
and of reconciling peace...

Speak a word of wisdom,
speak a word of helpful counsel
to make things crystal clear...
Speak a word of challenge
to rouse me from my dullness
lest I languish in my comfort...

Speak a word to help me love,
a word that draws me close to you,
to family, friends and neighbors...

Speak your word in all my thoughts,
embed your word deep in my soul
and turn my heart to you...

Speak a word to lift me up,
a word to give me faith and hope,
a word to help me trust again...

Speak the word I need to hear,
a word for me to live by, Lord,
your word of grace and peace...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
