They say "time marches on," Lord,
- and it certainly does!
The passage of time is inexorable:
time tires me
but nothing tires time...
The march of time is unrelenting, unyielding,
unstoppable and implacable
so why, Lord, am I taken by surprise
that August's almost history,
the summer's winding down
that fall's around the corner,
andHalloween is in the stores...
If I weren't as old as I am, Lord,
I might find it easier to accept
the quickly fading days
of this eighth month of the year...
But every year, Lord, and every month,
every week and every day,
every hour and every moment,
every minute and every second
brings me closer, ever closer,
to the timeless,
every week and every day,
every hour and every moment,
every minute and every second
brings me closer, ever closer,
to the timeless,
my forever,
to eternity,
to you...
to eternity,
to you...
The grace in this is simple, Lord:
you're in my every moment,
every hour, week and day;
you've walked with me
through all my years
and never-ever once,
you're in my every moment,
every hour, week and day;
you've walked with me
through all my years
and never-ever once,
not even for a second,
have you left my side
have you left my side
or slipped beyond my reach...
Time marches on, Lord,
time marches on
and sometimes I keep up
sometimes I fall behind
and sometimes I just stop
- in the middle of it all -
but even then, time keeps its pace,
but even then, time keeps its pace,
an eternal tide,
sweeping me from my life's shores
out to the endless ocean
of the mystery of your love,
of your patient, always merciful
and timeless love for me...
All time is yours
and in your kindness, Lord
I live on borrowed time
'til you call me to the timeless,
to that peace that has no end,
'til you call me home to be with you
- all in your good time...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you,
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
