NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 8/24

On Sundays, Night Prayer takes its lead from some element in the day's liturgy.   In the gospel at mass some folks asked Jesus, "Lord, will only a few be saved?" Who will go to heaven, Lord?  Will I go to heaven?  Heaven - what's heaven?

Lord, I want to go to heaven!

Wow!

I haven't prayed that way since I was a child
    when I prayed to go to heaven
        - lest I end up somewhere else!

I want to go to heaven, Lord,
    because my heart desires a place:
        where there's no more chaos,
            only calm;
        where there's no more sadness,
            only joy;
        where there's no more pain,
            where all is healed;
        where there's no more hatred,
            only love;
        where there's no more war,
            where all is peace;
        where none are left out,
            all are one;
        where I will find
            the ones I've lost;
        where there's no more disappointment,
            where all's fulfilled, met, realized;
        where there's no more past to grieve,
            no more future to anticipate,
        where all is now, where all is well,
            where all is you, where all are one
        and all we want and all we need
            will all be ours for ever more...

Yes, Lord, I want to go to heaven
    so help me live a life
whose path will lead me home to you,
    your heart, your peace, your joy...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
    and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
    and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

How I long to breathe the air of Heaven
Where pain is gone and mercy fills the streets
To look upon the One who bled to save me
And walk with Him for all eternity

There will be a day
When all will bow before Him
There will be a day
When death will be no more
Standing face to face
With He who died and rose again
Holy holy is the Lord

And every prayer we prayed in desperation
The songs of faith
We sang through doubt and fear
In the end we’ll see that it was worth it
When He returns to wipe away our tears

And on that day we join the resurrection
And stand beside the heroes of the faith
With one voice a thousand generations
Sing worthy is the Lamb who was slain
And on that day we join the resurrection
And stand beside the heroes of the faith
With one voice a thousand generations
Sing worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Forever He shall reign

So let it be today
We shout the hymn of Heaven
With angels and the Saints
We raise a mighty roar
Glory to our God
Who gave us life beyond the grave
Holy holy is the Lord
