when it strains credulity,
troubles the heart,
and sickens the soul,
then
sharpen our convictions,
deepen our compassion,
deepen our compassion,
and quicken our resolve
to plan, to scheme,
to work for justice,
to advocate for mercy
and to champion the cause
of those denied
their basic human rights...
Anoint us with your wisdom, Lord:
make us as cunning as serpents,
as innocent as doves...
Send your Spirit to guide us, Lord,
with gifts of kindness and patience,
charity, faith and counsel,
and the joy comes from doing your will...
And let nothing, Lord:
no ideology, philosophy or theory,
no bias, prejudice or intolerance,
no strategy, policy or system,
no authority, administration or allegiance -
let nothing, Lord, stand in the way
of our loving and serving you
in the lives and needs
of all our sisters and brothers...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
In searching for a song for tonight's prayer I took a chance and Googled "serpent, dove hymn" - and found this video! Beyond a YouTube page, however, I could find no information on the composer. Please note that the composer uses some transliterated Hebrew names (Yahusha, Ruach and Yahuah) for Jesus, Spirit and Lord God respectively. I was glad to find this song as I believe it pairs well with my prayer above - and responds to our own times.
Wise as Serpents, Harmless as Doves

Out among the wolves we go,
Not with swords, but truth of His word
Like gentle sheep, we walk the land,
Sent by Yahusha’s guiding hand.
He said, “Be wise, like serpents tread,
Don’t rush ahead, be led by the Ruach
Yet harmless, pure, like doves above—
Walk in power, walk in love.”
Therefore be wise as serpents
and harmless as doves.
Wise as serpents, sharp and bold,
In a world that’s growing cold.
Harmless as the morning dove,
Full of peace and truth and love.
Not of malice, not of pride—
In Yahuah’s wisdom we abide.
Walking carefully through the days,
In courage, truth, and righteous ways.
Therefore be wise as serpents
and harmless as doves
Be innocent in all you do (Romans 16:19),
Yet wise in what is pure and true.
The wisdom from above is peace (James 3:17),
Full of mercy, bringing release.
Shine like stars in darkest skies (Philippians 2:15),
Children blameless in His eyes.
Redeem the time, be strong and still (Ephesians 5:15–17),
To do our Father’s perfect will.
Therefore be wise as serpents
and harmless as doves
We’re not naive, we see the cost,
To speak the truth though we be tossed.
But fear won’t rule, for we belong
To the One who makes the weak heart strong.
Therefore be wise as serpents
and harmless as doves
Wise as serpents, not deceived,
Harmless as the ones who’ve believed.
Faithful in a world that hates,
But still we walk through narrow gates.
Truth and mercy in our hands,
Led by Yahuah’s firm commands.
In a world so dark and rough—
Therefore be wise as serpents
and harmless as doves
