Perhaps,
we've forgotten our song:
forgotten the words
or how the tune goes...
Perhaps we've forgotten why we sing -
or have we forgotten how to sing:
to sing the same words,
to the same tune,
in the same time
- all together...
Have we forgotten how to sing
in different parts - but in harmony;
in a symphony of sounds,
composed and arranged
to give voice to the song
that pulses and beats
in every heart and soul?
Has it come to this, Lord?
Have we lost
the words and the tune
to the song we sang?
Have we even forgotten
why we sang it?
Gather us back together again:
as a chorus where everyone's voice is heard,
mixing and blending with care;
as a choir whose lyrics tell the story
of who we are and how we became one;
as a chorale of different sounds and tones
singing the joys and sorrows of all...
Teach us how to sing again, Lord,
to open our souls through our voices...
Teach us the tune we used to sing, Lord,
and the truth of its beautiful lyrics...
Teach us again, Lord, why we sing
and how our song might harmonize us
in the freedom and peace we seek...
Amen.
