I watch a leaf, falling from its branch
then skittering here and there,
dancing down the street,
at the wind's own beck and call...
I walk and follow that single leaf
as it dawdles and pokes along
and then of a sudden, it leaps - a jeté
with a spirit my soul longs for...
I am that leaf, Lord, often stalled
or stilled upon the grassy path
or sometimes skipping all about,
holding in a secret joy...
I am that leaf and your Spirit, Lord,
your wind beneath my wings,
lifts me high 'til I descend
to gently rest upon the earth...
I am that leaf and without your breath
I'd have no breath, no power
to rise above what keeps me down,
to fly beyond what holds me back...
I am that leaf and I cry to you
"Lord, lift me up and raise me
from my sorrow and my grief
to joy that comes from you alone,
to peace that has no end..."
I am that leaf and you're the wind
I need to breathe, to dance, to play,
to make my way with grace along
this path that's mine to walk...
In the quiet of this moment, Lord,
with your Spirit's gentle breath
lift my soul, a fluttering leaf,
and catch me in your hand...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake,
watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
