It has taken about 500 years, Lord,
for the Pope and the King to come together
- to pray...
Monarchies and papacies move slowly,
oh, so very slowly...
I hope and I pray, Lord,
that in your eternal gaze
you might be patient with our glacial pace
in fulfilling your desire
that we all be one,
as you and your Father are one,
in the breath of your Holy Spirit...
Our discord and divisions are painful, Lord:
they wound and bruise the grace and beauty
of the people of God, your Body, the Church...
Send us your Spirit to quicken our steps
as we make our way towards unity:
in faith, in prayer, in our common mission
to tell the good news to all the world...
Gather us 'round one Table, Lord,
one altar of praise and sacrifice,
where all together, we'll be as one
in the Bread and Cup of your presence...
Help us not move so slowly
but give us the wisdom and grace we need
to come together, humbly, your own,
your daughters and sons, one family, Lord,
in faith, in hope and in love...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
As is the style with many songs from Taize, the refrain here repeats a number of time - but do wait for the verses to come 'round!
