Before you strip the trees
of all their beauty and their color,
before the branches drop and shed
before the branches drop and shed
their glowing fallish frocks,
take out your brush once more, Lord,
take out your brush once more, Lord,
and camouflage my life
from the palate of your grace...
Blend me in and hide me
midst the colors all around
and clothe me in a jacket
and clothe me in a jacket
dyed deep red to match the leaves:
autumn's parting affirmation,
nature signing in your hand,
your fingerprint of victory
on the season's final days...
Paint me in the scene
and help me see,
within my shivering soul,
all the beauty all around me
in the colors of October
bleeding, running like the sap
down a sugar maple's bark...
Lord, camouflage my life
in vibrant hues of saving grace:
hold and hug me in your arms
as autumn bends to winter's coming
with its gray and colder days...
Plant seeds of hope within me
where they'll sleep 'til light and warmth
come to waken all creation
to a springtime of your glory
and the colors of new life
in the greening of your peace
in the world and in my soul...
Amen.
