NIGHT PRAYER: Friday 10/22

Working on my homily for Sunday, Lord,
the 30th of the 34 Sundays in Ordinary Time:
Advent is only 5 weeks away!

The local grocery store is offering Halloween candy,
Thanksgiving dinner supplies,
and sweets and tchotchkes for Christmas
    - each within reach of the others!

Those who love the holidays will gladly rejoice
while those who dread them will sigh in dismay
and some like me will wistfully wonder
how time flies so fast
and why must we hurry
what will come in its time...

In our rush to reach whatever's ahead,
to get where we're going before we arrive,
we miss the season of waiting in hope...

We lose the longing that fills our hearts
with wishes and wonder,
with dreams and desires,
with the joy of waiting to find and to see,
to have and to hold what was promised,
prepared for, expected and then due...

Ah, the sweet anticipation,
the joyful expectation,
the prayerful contemplation
of what's coming, who draws near:
the fulfillment of a promise our patience has endured,
our hearts have held in trust,
and our souls have longed to meet...

Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleeep,
that awake we watch and wait for you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Patience, People by John Foley, SJ

Patience, people, 'til the Lord is come.
See the farmer await the yield of the soil.
He watches it in winter and in spring rain.
Patience, people, for the Lord is coming.

Patience, people, 'til the Lord is come.
You have seen the purpose of the Lord.
You know of His compassion and His mercy.
Patience, people, for the Lord is coming.

Patience, people, 'til the Lord is come.
Steady your hearts, for the Lord is close at hand.
And do not grumble, one against the other.
Patience, people for the Lord is coming.
