After Easter we offer the lilies in church
to any who want to take them home
and, with a prayer, plant the bulbs
with the hope they'll rise in glory
next spring...
But here we are and,
in the waning of ordinary time,
next year's lilies have heard our prayer
and answered: budding, blooming,
bursting forth in glory!
begin to lose their grip on summer's branch
and fall, in spirals, to the ground,
to the earth from which they came and must return
as all things do, as we shall, too, until
that last springtime when all will rise and bloom
in glory never fading, in never ending peace...
Until then, Lord, we praise you, we thank you:
for October's glimpse of Easter,
unbidden, unexpected, undeserved,
pure gift of grace and mercy,
a pledge of all you promise:
peace for ever and for ever,
Amen, amen, amen!
