On the Fridays of Lent, Night Prayer will look at different ways of understand-ing prayer and differing ways of praying. Tonight, just a few things we should remember about prayer and how many human activities and attitudes are, at their core, moments of prayer...
Some things I need to remember tonight...
Just to pause in your presence
in a moment of silence:
this is a prayer...
To sit in the dark
and ask where you are:
this is a prayer...
To rest in the quiet
and remember you're near:
this is a prayer...
To sit in the stillness,
and ponder your mystery:
this is a prayer...
To wait for God
and to wait some more:
this is a prayer…
To question God
in faith and in doubt:
this is a prayer…
To take a deep breath
and inhale your peace:
this is a prayer...
To hear in my heartbeat,
the pulse of your presence:
this is a prayer...
To close my eyes
and open my heart:
this is a prayer...
To gaze on the Cross
to see how I am loved:
this is a prayer...
To open my heart
just to empty it out:
this is a prayer...
To open my hands
and wait to be filled:
this is a prayer...
To know a moment
when I know I am loved:
this is a prayer...
To humbly mumble
what my soul longs to say:
this is a prayer...
To give of myself
out of love for another:
this is a prayer...
To trust and to hope
that all shall be well:
this is a prayer...
To do what is just
for the sake of truth:
this is a prayer...
To honor what lives
as divine and holy:
this is a prayer...
To uncover joy
in the heart of my sorrow:
this is a prayer...
To struggle to find
even one word to say:
this is a prayer...
To be grateful, in awe,
of beauty around me:
this is a prayer...
To dance and to sing
in the presence of death:
this is a prayer...
To cry my heart out
in grief and loss:
this is a prayer...
To speak not a word
and hear only the silence:
this is a prayer...
To trust that my silence
is God's language, too:
this is a prayer...
To hear a word
that touches my soul:
this is a prayer...
To hear in the quiet
the whisper of grace:
this is a prayer...
To open my heart, Lord,
to speak but your name...
this is a prayer...
Be there for me, Lord, when I come to pray
and answer my prayer with peaceful dreams
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
