NIGHT PRAYER: Saturday 9/20

Last night I posted a prayer about what we hear - and don't hear.  Here's a prayer for what we see - and fail to see...

I see the world through my own eyes, Lord
    - and I know my eyes play tricks on me...

Sometimes I miss what's right in front of me:
My bias, prejudice,
   selfishness and haste blur my vision
and keep me from seeing
   what's "hiding" in plain sight...

And sometimes, Lord, I see things that aren't there,
    at least not in reality:
        I "see" what I only imagine,
        I only see what I want to see,
        I see what fantasy tempts me to take
            as real - when I know it's not...

And sometimes, Lord, I refuse to see
    what you'd have me see:
        an opportunity, perhaps a new path,
        a neighbor's need or helping hand,
        a challenge, a chance, or a slice of the truth
        or the next right thing that I might do...

And some times, Lord - I'm just blind!
Oh, I can see with the eyes in my head -
    but my mind's eyes are cloudy,
    my heart's eyes are closed
    and my soul's eyes glaze over
    in lazy indifference and boredom...

And though I know my vision's blurred
I still presume - sometimes I insist -
    that all should see the world
        as I see it,
        as I perceive it,
        as I want it to be,
        as it looks to me,
        as I "know" it...

Blurry vision - that's what I've got!
Help me see more clearly, Lord:
    repair, adjust and correct my vision...

Help me see the world through your eyes, Lord
    for with crystal clarity you see everything
        plain as day, just as it is
    and help me see through my neighbors' eyes,
        through their pain and needs and wants..

You see what's real, Lord,
    you see what's true and just;
you see through me,
    to the core of my being
and you see with compassion
    with mercy and grace...

You see into every heart and soul;
    you read our thoughts before we think them,
    you see what no one else can see...

Help me see life as you do, Lord,
    with compassion, mercy
        and love for all...

Heal my blurry vision, Lord,
     'til I find you and see you
        in all my neighbors
    and in finding you there,
        help me see your face
            and envision your merciful love...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
    and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
    and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

1. Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me save that thou art.
Thou my best thought by day and by night;
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

2. Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true Word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.
Thou my great Father, I thy dear child;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

3. High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'ns Sun!
Heart of my heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
